Brighton & Hove Children’s Festival returns in 2012 with a ten-day arts festival for children under 11 and their families. The festival runs from 6-15th April and this year is challenging families to take part in a series of events, performances and workshops all inspired by the theme of Bravery.

Some of the highlights include:

You’ll like this film because you’re in it – A family filmmaking event inspired by the community filmmaking ideas of cinematic virtuoso Michel Gondry. Families are given all the equipment to write, direct and star in their own short film about bravery.

  • Dancing in Darkness - A family dance class which takes place in gradually dimming light and culminates in disco in the darkness.
  • Daring Dress Up - Back by popular demand, community dress up team Gladrags invite families to dress up, add some sparkle and shine, and complete a series of dares around the city centre.
  • Celebrating Grandparents – An interactive event which aims to challenge out dated views of grand parents and celebrate the vital role they play in modern family life.
  • Great Expectations – A chance for expectant mothers, fathers and siblings to creatively express and share their thoughts about their uniquely brave adventure.

Over half of the festivals events are also free of charge including Break the Spell: On Friday 13 April, the unluckiest day of all, the festival is inviting families to challenge their bad luck superstitions by undertaking a series of activities including walking under a ladder trail, putting up umbrellas and making single magpies.  All families will be asked to monitor their luck during the following week and post any significant or insignificant finding on our blog.

This year the festival is jointly led by Komedia Productions Ltd and Brighton & Hove Arts Commission. Komedia will be the festival hub with a full programme of events running from 9th-14th April and will be the home of the festival box office and information point. Other venues involved across the city include Brighton Dome, Jubilee Square and The Basement.

SCHOOL OF DOC – LEARNING THROUGH THE LENS

Fiona Adams

This Year Shoot It For Yourself Productions is focussing on how young people in the South East can actively engage with their learning through the film making process.  Subjects from evolution to contemporary art are being explored by the youngest talent in town.  With current school budgets so tight we need to look for partners beyond the classroom and we will be discussing future options on how we can make this happen.

A wide range of young people, ages 8 – 18, from schools including Balfour Primary, Whitehawk and Varndene College will be invited to present, discuss and screen their latest work.  Opportunities with the new Junior Arts Award and First Light in the Classroom will be presented along with the brand new Shoot it For Yourself collaboration with the Saatchi Gallery – exciting stuff for all those young at heart.

The event takes place on:
Saturday 24th March

10am - 11am

Dear all (please excuse cross postings)

Further to WEA mentoring opportunity I recently circulated:

Please see attached info re: free, accredited mentoring course – Mentoring Young People – introductory meeting on Friday 30th at PACA 6th Form.  Please display if possible.

Thanks

Me n t o r i n g Yo u n g Pe o p l e

Would you like to help a young person facing

difficulties at school? This is an exciting

opportunity to become a volunteer mentor – full

training and support will be given.

Course tutor: Janet Farr 01273 422632

Aim of the programme

To train volunteer mentors so that they are ready to

support a student on a one-to-one basis who is

experiencing social difficulties at school.

What is a mentor?

A mentor is someone who is able to give support

and a regular time commitment to help a young

person to develop their confidence, self-esteem and

social skills so that they feel more integrated in the

social life of the school.

Who can become a mentor?

Anyone aged 16+ years. You may already be

involved with young people eg as a Youth Work

volunteer or you may have other useful or relevant

life experience. You may have experienced

difficulties yourself at school and be ready to support

someone else with similar problems. An enhanced

CRB check will be required which we can organise.

Mentoring - the benefits

For you, the benefits could include:

Developing your skills

Providing useful experience for a career in

social, probation or youth work, teaching or

classroom support

The satisfaction of providing valuable support

to a young person at risk of isolation or

underachievement.

When/where?

The training will be held on Fridays 0930-1300 for 8

weeks from 27 April 2012 at the 6th Form Centre

(excluding half-term week)

Thursday 12th April 2012

Part of the Children’s Festival

Call for Family Presenters: Pecha-Kucha Bravery

Have you been brave?  What did it feel like? Where were you? What was the story behind it?  Do you have some photos that will help you tell your story? We want to know!

We are looking for courageous families* to come along and tell us the when / what / why / how / who / was brave.  It could be about when you broke your arm, or when your goldfish died, or when you went on a zip wire!  Come along and tell us about it in the Pecha Kucha Way!

Pecha-Kucha is basically a visual powerpoint presentation.  You have 20 pictures which are timed for 20 seconds each and shown on a big screen while you talk about your story/ies.  It’s really fun and informal and a great way to be brave and share with others!

If you are a family* interested in presenting please do get in touch!  Each family member could have their own story to tell.

*family – young persons aged 5 to 11 and their parents, careers, grandparents, aunts, uncles sisters brothers mentors or on their own which would be truly brave!

School to Business: Bridge the Gap

How often do you hear that young people don’t have the skills needed for today’s workplace?  In Eastbourne, the Chamber of Commerce has identified the employability skills of young people as a real issue.

Culture Shift, the new social enterprise that has grown out of Creative Partnerships in Sussex and Surrey, is proposing to adapt their creative partnership model to support school and business partnerships.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR 2 BUSINESSES IN BRIGHTON WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN COLLABORATING WITH THEIR LOCAL SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THIS FUNDED INITIATIVE.

Participating businesses are invited to identify a need or an issue for which they need a creative solution.  Examples might include; developing a new marketing strategy, setting up a promotional event, developing your company web presence or connecting with younger markets via social networking.

Culture Shift and Eastbourne Education Business Partnership will match the business with a school and a creative professional to work together on their brief.  Together they will find creative solutions to the business problem.

The benefits work both ways; young people and teachers get to work on a real live work-related challenge, businesses benefit directly from working with young people with fresh ideas and, of course, the input of the creative professional.  Both schools and businesses benefit from the profile attached to their work together and the opportunity to learn more about each other.

Tue, 08 Nov 2011 06:57:09 -0800 Reaching for Gold for young people http://bhartsexpress.posterous.com/reaching-for-gold-for-young-people http://bhartsexpress.posterous.com/reaching-for-gold-for-young-people

Reaching for Gold is a competition for young people in the South East region to enter an idea for a product, service or other that will benefit other people. The best ideas will be selected and the teams will be paired up with business, voluntary and community sector mentors for a once in a lifetime opportunity. The deadline for applications is 5pm on 30th November 2011. For more information visit www.reachingforgold.org.uk.

Now is the time to start Reaching for Gold.

From a small idea, submitted to the website a great project can emerge!  Applications are now being accepted for the 2011/12 Reaching for Gold competition.

The competition is a chance for young people in the South East region to enter an idea for a product, service or other that will benefit other people.  The best ideas will be selected and the teams will be paired up with business and voluntary and community sector mentors for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Many of last year’s teams spent a day in the company head offices, looking at latest developments or learning key skills such as developing plans and presenting.  This year all the selected teams will win a special prize for their idea and after 3 months mentoring the groups will be able to compete for three cash prizes to make the project into a reality at Windsor Castle.

This competition gives people aged 14-21 a chance to raise their aspirations, develop an innovative idea and have a once in a lifetime experience.  At the same time staff giving the mentoring will also be able to develop their skills, gain fresh insight and enjoy the competition.

QUOTE PLEASE

The closing date for applications is 5pm 30th November 2011, more information can be found at www.reachingforgold.org.uk

Reaching for Gold has been developed by SEEDA and members of the Corporate Cabinet, supported by Groundwork, Accentuate, SSAT and AbilityNet. The idea for Reaching for Gold comes from the regional programme ‘Create, Compete, Collaborate’ which has the aim that "Every young person born after 1983 will have the chance to Create, Compete or Collaborate with another young person in another country" between now and 2012.

Reaching for Gold has received funding from Accentuate, the London 2012 Legacy Programme for the South East.  Accentuate is funded by Legacy Trust UK, creating a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK, SEEDA and the Regional Cultural Agencies.
